Correct Driving Posture | Adjust to the Right Driving Position

Rushing out the door to embark on our Alpharetta commutes, going out for a quick bite at an Atlanta vegan restaurant, or cruising to a friend’s birthday party, we rarely think about our driving position. This is bad. With the correct driving position, back pain, shoulder tension, stuff limbs and leg cramps can be significantly lessened. Think about it: the average American spends almost 300 hours per year driving, potentially sitting incorrectly in their car seats. Needless to say, the right driving position can have a huge impact on your well-being. Let Hennessy Porsche North Atlanta help you learn more about the proper driving position, the correct sitting posture in a car, and how to take advantage of your car’s features to ensure maximum comfort and health.

Correct Driving Position Adjustments

Not to continue belaboring the negatives of bad driving posture, but it’s vital for you to have the right position, especially for lumbar spine support. Not only will you avoid physical pain and discomfort, but you’ll avoid situations that create poor visibility, lack of control, and potential fatigue—this makes the road more dangerous for everyone, especially when you’re going long distances. So what is good driving posture? To find the right driving position for you while driving your Porsche, follow the tips below:

  • Adjust Your Seat Position — Use the multiple points of articulation on your driver’s seat to ensure that you’re not too far from the steering wheel. If you have to lean forward to adjust the radio or air conditioning, your seat isn’t properly adjusted.
  • Adjust Your Seat Height — People often move their seats back and forth, but they rarely consider seat height. How do you know if your seat is at a good height? There should be about an inch of space between the back of your knee and the seat. Also, your knees shouldn’t be higher than your hips, and make sure your your knees and hips line up straight. If you can’t see out of your windshield, raise your seat until your hips are higher than your knees. And if your car doesn’t allow you to change the height of your seat, sit on a pillow, if necessary, to ensure proper knee-hip alignment.
  • Adjust Your Steering Wheel — If you’ve adjusted your body to fit well in your cabin, your wheel may be at an awkward position. Don’t readjust for your wheel! Steering wheels these days are often adjustable—raise or lower it before adjusting your body.
  • Adjust the Seat Back — What’s the best seat angle for your back? You shouldn’t be hunching forward, or halfway to a vertical position. Shoot for a 100-degree angle between the seat base—where your butt goes—and the seat back. Basically, instead of sitting straight up, your back should be ever-so-slightly back. You should not have to hunch forward to reach the wheel, and your elbows should be slightly bent.

  • Adjust Your Headrest — The headrest, or head restraint, is important for safety during crashes. Needless to say, your head should be positioned correctly when driving. Ensure the back of your head rests in the center of the headrest while driving.
  • Readjust Your Seat Forward and Backward — Now that you’ve readjusted your sitting position, you may need to move your seat forward or backward once again. Make sure your knees are slightly bent while driving. You shouldn’t ever feel like you have to stretch for the pedals.
